Google is an amazing tool. But can it tell us anything about the support services market place? Probably not, but it was fun trying...

Edition: Capita, Serco, Atkins and who else? - Support Services Special.

We took the players in our Sector Watch (below). And searched on the names. We had to reject some of our favourites — Atkins for example returns a lot of diet related hits.

Who generated the most hits? Capita (a good company), then Jarvis (probably there for other reasons). And the least? Mitie, which doesn’t get the mentions its size deserves.

Then we went a step further and started searching companies together. For example “Carillion” and “Mowlem” appear together on 813 web pages. Seeing who appears together most with whom suggests the enterprise map shown on the right.

We’re not being entirely serious here, but do note that Carillion and Babcock might have hoped for a different postioning. Amec is doing something about it and applying to switch to the FTSE Support Services sector.
